Instagram, what are you playing at?

If you’ve been online in the last 24 hours, you will have likely heard about Instagram’s crazy decision to release their new feature, Instagram Stories.

Hmm, sound familiar anyone? That’s because Snapchat already has this feature. Rewind to October 2013, where Snapchat Stories were released into the world. Never used Snapchat before? Let me explain.

Snapchat allows you to take photos and short videos and post them to specific friends, or add them to your story. “Snapchat Stories add Snaps together to create a narrative” – any photos or video snippets you add to your story will be visible to your friends for 24 hours; then disappear.

What are Instagram Stories then, and how are they different? Instagram states in their latest blog post, “Bring your story to life in new ways with text and drawing tools. The photos and videos will disappear after 24 hours and won’t appear on your profile grid or in your feed.” So, very similar to Snapchat then?

As an avid user of Snapchat and Instagram myself, I feel like some users just won’t understand the logic behind Instagram’s choice in releasing this feature. When I post to Instagram, I am very selective. I pick my best or favourite photos that I want to showcase online. There are many bloggers who use Instagram to stick to a theme they have created religiously. It’s not just a slapdash selection of photos thrown together.

Snapchat, in my opinion, is much more of a casual platform. It has become the social media app of choice for many teenagers and young people, who want to share photos from the latest party or event they’ve been to. Or, they’re just messing around sending funny photos to their friends using Snapchat’s lenses feature, one of my personal favourites. It’s about having fun and is a very playful platform, whose content is definitely not as polished as Instagram’s.

So Instagram, what’s your thinking here? I thought you were all about helping users to display their photos, often edited to perfection. Let me give you my take on this move: Instagram, who are owned by Facebook, are trying to jump on Snapchat’s success and take a slice of their pie. They’ve previously attempted to buy Snapchat for $3 billion a couple of years ago, so this is the natural progression of their obsession with taking over the world.
